EL with Mrs. McGuire

Students are exposed to complex text and learn

non-fiction reading strategies to support critical thinking.  Mrs. McGuire works with classroom teachers to focus instruction on areas of need.

  • Pre-Reading Strategies

  • Use of Text Features

  • Main Topic-->Main Idea --> Main Purpose

  • Key Details VS Interesting Details

  • Self-Monitoring Comprehension

  • Annotation and Note Taking

  • Author's Purpose

  • Synthesizing Multiple Sources

In this half of EL, students experience incredible hands-on learning.  First, all students 1st-5th work in a keyboarding program called Typing Agent.  Once students develop more proficient typing skills, this time becomes a Makerspace.

Every Makerspace can look different.  Check out your local library-many are adding this creative outlet for young readers!  Our Makerspace includes the following:

  • LEGO

  • Sewing

  • Robotics

  • Circuits

  • Beadwork

  • Building Structures

  • Jewelry Making

  • Crochet

  • PlayDoh

  • Kinex

  • Make Do
