About D96 Targets

Our curriculum is based in the newly adopted Common Core.  We have delved into the Common Core standards to find the skills and strategies expected of our students.  These clearly defined skills are what we refer to as targets.  Each trimester, and both cycles within it, are composed of a specific set of targets per content area.  These targets are what you will find on your child's report card.  As we instruct these specific skills, social-emotional learning and technology integration are strongly embedded into daily school experiences.

When targets are reported out, you will see scores of E (extend), M (mastery), D (developing mastery), or N (not yet mastering). Mastery is the expectation.  When mastery is demonstrated early on in a cycle, a student will have the opportunity to extend their learning with critical thinking.  Developing mastery can indicate inconsistent mastery or mastery with some teacher support.

Literacy
Math

Literacy is broad category including reading both fiction and informational texts, analyzing text, writing, and use of language.  We cover three different types of writing (narrative, informative, and opinion) as well as a myriad of foundational language skills in first grade.

Last year, we began using a new reading program, which we will continue this year.

Words Their Way word study is a phenomenal program that supports kids' spelling in a more authentic way compared to traditional spelling tests, which rely on mere memorization.

Science

Our district has officially adopted the National Science Standards, NGSS.  Our new curriculum covers three science disciplines: Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth & Space Science.  Science is very hands-on part of our day, which the kids love!

Specials: Art, Music, Physical Education

Each trimester's report card will also include targets from art, music, and physical education as completed by those respective teachers.

Illinois is proud to require Physical Education, and D96 students attend a 30 min. gym class every day with certified teachers!

Math is also a comprised of multiple subcategories under the Common Core: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base 10, Measurement & Data, and Geometry.  We cover a variety of concepts under each umbrella of mathematics study.

It's important to note that rote calculation is only part of understanding math.  We teach students to show their thinking with accuate computation, fluency, drawings, physical manipulatives, or even verbal explanation with proper math vocabulary.

Social Studies

The units of first grade social studies are Famous Americans, Needs & Wants, and Geography.  We also explore these concepts throughout the year within reading and writing activities!

Learner Characteristics

Teaching what to learn as determined by content pacing guides is only part of what we do at school.  Teaching students HOW to learn is a whole other set of skills addressed throughout a child's school career.  These skills are refered to as learner characteristics, including organization, time management, work completion, collaboration with peers, and respect for peers.  **Similar skills are assessed in our district through the middle school level!  These social skills and work habits are critical to student growth.
